Don’t disclose marks to students of Class X, CBSE

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has asked its schools “not to communicate the marks of summative assessment II (SA-II) to the candidates of Class X under any circumstances”.
This year’s batch of Class X students is the first to not take the Board exams, after the CBSE extended the new evaluation scheme of Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) to this class as well. The scheme was introduced in Class IX initially.
Students taking the exams in March this year will be awarded grades and grade points in each subject instead of marks.
Under the CCE, students are evaluated throughout the year and both the scholastic and non-scholastic areas are taken into consideration. Summative assessments are the term-ending exams. In each term, there are two formative assessments (that test the non-scholastic areas) and one summative assessment (the pen and paper term-ending exam).
The summative assessment-I for classes IX and X was conducted in the second half of September.
The answer scripts of Class X students, meanwhile, will be evaluated internally by the school. The CBSE has also said they will provide the question paper to the schools. In fact, the CBSE will send a marking scheme to the schools for evaluation of papers by the teachers. Schools, however, have the freedom to involve teachers from other schools for evaluation of the answer scripts.
The CBSE will go for a “random verification of the assessment procedures of schools” through Board officials or nominees appointed by the Board.
The CBSE official said the Board will send separate CDs containing question paper banks for classes IX and X. The school may either pick up one question paper for each subject or mix and match the papers by using different questions or sections from different sets of question papers and prepare a question paper based on the Board’s sample paper, design and blueprint.
The Board also has given a choice to schools to “prepare their own question papers” as per the sample paper available on the CBSE website. In case a school prepares its own question papers, the authorities will have to send the question papers and marking scheme to the Board for verification within a week of conduct of the respective papers, officials said.
For Class IX, the Board plans to dispatch the CDs containing question papers to all schools that they to reach by February 20. The SA-II of both classes IX and X starts in March.

How to overcome stress, CBSE

To give students in classes X and XII relief from the examination stress, Central Board Of Secondary Education will be starting its counselling sessions from Monday. Twenty counsellors from across the country will listen to students' problems over the phone. Any issue related to upcoming exams can be discussed with them.

"The purpose of these counselling sessions is to relieve the children from the pressure that they might be facing and help them maintain their mental health," said CBSE counsellor Rakesh Sachdeva, who is principal of DAV Model  Senior Secondary School, Sector 15.

The programme that was started 13 years ago by the board saw great success in the city in 2009. Around 500 calls were received in the two months off the helpline's opening. This year also, counsellors are hoping to help many children.

"I am already getting calls from students about various things like the system of continuous and comprehensive examination, places where they can download question papers, format of CBSE exams and the syllabus as well. We will handle calls from students from all over India. Parents, teachers and students should read circular no. 5 for issues related to the exams on the CBSE website," said

counsellor Madhu Bahl, principal of KBDAV, Sector 7.

Students and parents can call on the helpline numbers to talk about any problems pertaining to the exams. Counsellors are also equipped to talk about ways to deal with examination stress. The helplines will be open for students and parents to call 24 hours a day till March 31. Anonymity of the callers would be maintained.

ICSE schools won't choose the way of CBSE

Although the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has decided to make the annual board examination at the end of class X optional, the other pan-India board of secondary education, the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE), has decided that all students must face the board examination, without exception.
There is no move to introduce a different system of evaluation akin to the CBSE's Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation, (CCE), which takes account of a range of skills, apart from academics.
Principals of the ICSE schools in the city feel that a little stress as a teenager never did any harm. It is a challenge that students must face, and it will strengthen them and leave them better prepared to face examinations in future.
“The ICSE board should not make the examination optional. A board exam is any day better. It gives students an idea about where they stand, at the all-India level. Facing the first such examination at the age of 15 or 16 will leave the student better equipped for such examinations in future, and empower him/her to deal with other examinations they have to take for entry to professional courses and colleges with confidence,” said Radhika Lobo, principal, New Horizon Public School.
The principals added that the ICSE board had a record of conducting systematic and impartial examinations, so there was no question of undue stress. Besides, if the schools were allowed to conduct the final examination of their own, the whole seriousness of the exercise would get lost.
“The ICSE is organised and systematic. There is no reason to make the examination optional. The stress that children face in taking the examination is healthy,” said Sister Pauline, principal, Sacred Heart Girl's High School. She added that students who felt that they could not cope with the pressure of the board
examination already had other options — they could shift to another board, or take the open school route for higher education.
Father Celestine Sera, principal, St. Joseph's Boys' High School, said that the centralised correction process also ensured that there was fairness in the system, and all bias was ruled out. This too was one reason why it was healthy for students passing out of secondary school to take the board examination, he said.
He added that there was no need to divide students at the end of class ten, into two categories, those taking the board examinations and those choosing not to.

25% quota in schools for poor kids ordered by Administration

In a major move towards implementation of the Right to Education (RTE) Act,
the Patna administration on Sunday directed all CBSE/ICSE-affiliated schools in the district to reserve 25% of the available seats in Class I/nursery sections for children belonging to weaker sections of the society.

Patna DM Jitendra Kumar Sinha issued the directive at a meeting with principals/representatives of these schools. As many as 75 schools were represented in the meet, official sources said and added they were also directed to inform the administration about the number of seats available in these sections in their respective schools.

The schools have been asked to reserve seats for children belonging to weaker sections and hailing from the neighborhood of the school, ie. a radius of 1 km. Half of this quota will be reserved for girls.

It could not be known immediately if the quota would be implemented from the coming academic session in 2011-12. Many of these schools were confused on the issue and said they would think about it.

"We will take a call on it later," Notre Dame principal Sister Tessy told TOI on Sunday evening. Loyola's Brother Felix and Don Bosco's Mary Alphonso echoed Sister Tessy when this paper reached them for their reaction.

District officials, however, quoted a state human resources department (HRD) circular to point out that the quota is mandatory. The circular, issued recently, has directed district administrations to implement various provisions of the RTE Act related to admissions in schools.

Rejecting the demand from a section of private school managements to allow them to continue with admission tests for Class I, the state HRD has said that no child should be subjected to screening at the time of admission. DM Sinha said, adding selection of children should be done randomly.TOI

CBSE Students of Class 10 won't have enough time for exams

Schools will have to conduct their final exam for Class 10 students during the second half of March, says a new circular from the CBSE dated January 19. This is the first year that Class 10 students were given the choice of appearing for the school-conducted final exam instead of the CBSE board

exam, held on March 1. In Maharashtra, 25% of Class 10 students have opted to take the school final exam. The board also emphasised that schools cannot inform students directly of their scores.
"Kindly note that schools will not communicate the marks of a summative assessment - II (final exam) to the candidates of Class 10 under any circumstances," said the circular. "The board will declare the results in May with the results of the board-based summative assessment-II and will issue the uniform certificate to every student." Schools will have to conduct their second summatives (final exam) for Class 9 in the first half of March.

The board will send compact discs containing question banks from which schools can design their own question papers. In case a school wishes to set its own paper, they will have to be pre-approved by the board.

"This is to ensure that the same standard is maintained," said Avnita Bir, principal of RN Podar School, Santacruz. "Now we will have to figure out how to handle our exam schedules since those taking the board exam will be begin two weeks earlier."

CBSE will verify evaluation of school-conducted exams

In order to make school-conducted Class X exams more credible, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will appoint officials to randomly verify assessment procedures.
The board has also directed schools to involve teachers of other schools in evaluation of exam papers, to avoid partiality.
These are part of a set of strict guidelines issued by CBSE on Wednesday, to be followed in the examinations of March this year.
“With the Class X exam becoming optional for the first time, students can now take school-conducted exams. However, with the issuance of guidelines, we want to ensure that school-based exam will maintain the high standards of the board,” said a senior CBSE official.
Since the schools will be conducting and evaluating exam papers, CBSE has strictly asked them not to communicate the marks of the students on their own. Once the evaluation of the answer papers is done by the schools, these should be sent to the board, so that results are declared by CBSE.
“The board would be declaring the results of class X in May, along with the results of board-based summative assessment. We will be issuing a uniform certificate to every student,” said MC Sharma, controller of examinations.“Through the guidelines, we have laid down procedures on how the summative assessment for class X students must be carried out,” he added.
The summative assessment in March represents the final leg of the assessment of students.
Schools will, however, continue to have the freedom to formulate their own question papers, use CBSE question papers’ bank or mix and match them. “In order to ensure standards, the question paper bank in different subjects would be sent by the board so as to reach schools in time. From the question paper bank, the schools can set their respective question papers,” stated the circular issued by CBSE.
Moreover, evaluation of answer scripts will be done by the school teachers themselves, on the basis of the marking scheme provided by the board. With the issuance of guidelines, CBSE hopes all the apprehensions of parents could be put to rest about the credibility of school-conducted exams.
For the first time, from this year onwards, Class X students will have the option of appearing either for the CBSE-conducted board examination or final class X test conducted by their respective schools.
The CBSE made class X board exams optional from 2011, as part of Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) system. Although there was some apprehension among parents, the number of students who have opted out of the board examination shows that the scheme has found favour with students.
In the very first year that the option has been made available, about two-thirds of students have opted out of the board exam. CBSE sources said about 5 lakh students have opted to go with the school examination. The total number of students studying in class X in schools affiliated to the CBSE across India is 8.23 lakh.DNA

Don’t put your cell number on Facebook

A security expert has warned that users should remove their home addresses and phone numbers from their Facebook accounts.
Graham Cluley said the website now gives third parties access to that information.
The website said in a blog post at the weekend that it would give developers of applications access to the contact information of users who install their apps.
"These permissions must be explicitly granted to your application by the user via our standard permissions dialogs. Please note that these permissions only provide access to a user's address and mobile phone number, not their friend's addresses or mobile phone numbers," the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Facebook's Jeff Bowen as saying.
However, Sophos security expert Cluley, has raised doubts over the move.
"You have to ask yourself - is Facebook putting the safety of its 500+ million users as a top priority with this move?" he said.
"It won't take long for scammers to take advantage of this new facility, to use for their own criminal ends."
Cluley advised that users should take personal info such as home addresses an, d mobile numbers off their pages.
"You can imagine, for instance, that bad guys could set up a rogue app that collects mobile phone numbers and then uses that information for the purposes of SMS spamming or sells on the data to cold-calling companies," he said.

The number of student in the Rajasthan board has increased to 15 per cent as compared to last year and has touched around 16 lakh.

The board chairman, Subash Garg, is taking regular meetings and follow-ups for conducting exams. "The board, has for the first time, kept private schools teachers at bay during examinations," said officials.

Question papers will be kept at police stations near the examination centres and boarder security home guards will be deployed on sensitive centres. The board is cautious because of the paper leak two years ago.

Practical examinations in CBSE will start in first fortnight of February while the RBSE will start in the month of March. "We are providing extra classes to Class XII students," said a principal of private school. "We will arrange cluster-level camps for students of government schools, mostly in English, science and Mathematics to prepare them for the exam," said O P Sharma, Deputy Director of Secondary education.

Notice to schools for flouting admission rules

The Delhi government on Wednesday decided to issue notices to a few public unaided schools in the capital for violation of the nursery admission guidelines. Acting on the complaints received by the Directorate of Education (DoE), the notices warn the schools against non-compliance with the admission guidelines, which could lead to the cancellation of the admission procedure in the schools.
Few schools in the city as part of their categories have kept profession of parents as one of the criteria. As per clause 13 (1) b of the Right to Education Act, no school or person shall, while admitting a child subject him/her to screening procedure.  Based on this the nursery admission guidelines issued by the Delhi Government this year, said while creating various categories for admission a parents income or educational qualification cannot be taken into account and the school cannot interview either the parent or the child.
One of the schools Delhi Public School, Rohini has allocated up to 10 points for parents who are teachers or professors on permanent appointment in Government recognised institutions, medical colleges or engineering colleges and other institutes of higher studies approved by UGC. Besides this doctors, engineers, information technology, management, scientists, lawyers, international medal winners in sports, and defence personnel among others can also avail these points.
"The government guidelines mentions that a child cannot be screened based on a parents qualification and annual income, it doesn't mention that the parents profession cannot be taken into account. We do not think it is violation in any way," said Rita Sen, principal, DPS Rohini who said she had not received any notice till Wednesday evening.
Education Minister Arvinder Singh said, "We have taken note of the complaints received on discriminatory criteria and the concerned schools will be sent notices. No school can screen a child based on parents' profession. After all the profession is part of the parents' educational qualification." Singh also added that if the parents feel that a school has discriminatory criteria or is overcharging for forms they should complain to the DoE and immediate action will be taken against those found guilty.
Sale of forms extended
Acting on the Directorate of Education's circular on Tuesday which asked all unaided recognised schools in Delhi to sell forms for a reasonable period of at least for 15 days, some schools in the city have extended the days for sale of forms now.
Both the branches of  Springdales School, Dhaula Kuan and Pusa Road which started the sale of form from Janury3 were slated to sell forms only till January 10 but have now extended it till January 15. The submission dates, which were earlier supposed to be for only till January 15, have now been extended till January 18. Similarly, Tagore International School Vasant Vihar and East of Kailash have also extended sale  to January 15.HT

Most of Class X students opt for Boards

Despite the option with the Class X students of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to appear in Boards or school-based internal examinations, majority of students have opted for the Boards.
While in both the cases, the question papers are framed by the Board, the difference is in the evaluation.
Surprisingly, in absence of clarity over options, most of the schools have asked the students to opt for the traditional Board pattern instead of the internal exams. While in some cases, the parents have discouraged their wards from opting for school-based exams.

“The total number of applications the Board has received from various schools from the region for Class X Board examination did not decrease considerably, though the final figure is yet to be released. The major reason behind this is the lack of awareness among schools as well as their parents. Despite organizing several orientation programmes in the schools, they are still in a dilemma. Lack of awareness at the time of filling the examination forms made the students opt for Board examinations only,” said R J Khanderao, Regional Officer. CBSE.

This is agreed upon by the Principal of Shivalik Public School, J S Bedi, “Parents want their wards to opt for the traditional Board examinations. Since Board examinations are being conducted for years now, it will take some years for the public to adopt another pattern. Also, it is believed that those who would apply for CBSE Board examinations would be a month behind those who go for internal examinations. As the Board result would take some time, the internal results would be declared early which would help the students to take admissions in Class XI.” He said in his school, though, around 80 per cent of the students have opted for internal examinations.

“The absence of clarity over admissions in Class XI has forced the students from both private and government schools to opt for Board examinations,” revealed one of the senior officials of the Education Department.
“ As there is still confusion over internal question paper, marking and report cards among schools, despite the Board's encouragement to schools to opt for internal examinations, the schools have asked the students to opt for the Board pattern,” said Rakesh Sachdeva, Principal DAV Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 15.
The internal and Board examinations have also to do with the option of either continuing in the same school or changing it after Class X.
“Generally, the students who want to stay in the same school after Class X would opt for internal examination. Many students opt for government schools in Class XI which helps them in taking coaching classes for engineering or medical entrance examinations,” said H S Mamik, Chairman of Vivek High School.

DPS School Principal Reema Dewan said, “What is the use of implementing the CCE pattern by the Board when the schools are still opting for the Board examinations. This would mean an entire year has been wasted in the exercise. Also, there is confusion among schools over pre-board examinations.”

CBSE class X exam not quite so fearsome in this year

This year’s is a batch of students at schools affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) that will exercise a choice that others before them never had.
As class X students in CBSE schools prepare for their ‘term-ending’ examinations in March, they are privileged with the choice of either taking the board examination, or writing an exam conducted by the school.
With the introduction of the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) scheme, now students can choose to revise half the syllabus for the March examination. They have already completed a system of evaluation for the other half earlier.
CCE requires students to go through evaluation processes periodically.
There are formative assessment (FA) tests, and end-of-term summative assessment procedures (SA). There are thus tests spread out across the academic calendar, offering students the choice of doing away with the annual board examination of the CBSE.
Students are happy with the new scheme of assessment. The burden of mammoth coursework, usually associated with class X board examinations, has lifted. “I have opted out of the board examination. I will now be studying only half the syllabus in all subjects. I’m happy with this decision to write the examination conducted by my school,” said Akhil Verma, a class X student at a prestigious CBSE school in the city.
Akhil’s classmate Poornima P said that with the optional board exam, stress levels have gone down drastically. “I’m relaxed about the whole thing, and quite prepared for the school exam,” she said.
No more bitter competition
The CBSE made class X board exams optional from 2011, as part of the CCE system, introduced for classes IX and X in 2009. Although there was apprehension among parents, the number of students who opted out of the board examination shows that students have backed CCE to the hilt.
In the very first year, about two-thirds of students have opted out of the board exam. CBSE sources said around 5 lakh students (of the 8.23 lakh students in class X in CBSE schools across the country) have opted to go with the school examination.
Under CCE, an academic year is divided into two terms. There are two types of assessment procedures — formative assessment (FA), spread out across the year, and summative assessment (SA), conducted at the end of each of the two terms of the academic year.
The students are offered grades rather than marks, dulling the intense competitiveness. “The competition is not so bitter now,” says Manjula Raman, principal, Army Public School, Bangalore.
