Teachers warn against relying on guidebooks

If you are one of those who plan to sail through the Boards by cramming the guidebooks at the 11th hour, here’s some bad news for you. Teachers have warned that guidebooks will not really help students prepare for the examination. On the contrary, students end up wasting their precious time on guidebooks. Instead, they should utilise that time to read their NCERT books and classnotes.
Usha Ram, principal of Laxman Public School, Hauz Khas said, “The guides for various subjects available at the market are not helpful at all. They are not written well, have spelling and grammatical errors and one cannot guarantee the veracity of the information in these books.”
She feels that these kind of books could prove detrimental to the students’ performance.
“Students should instead make short notes, which is basically a summary of the chapters. Instead of going through the entire chapters, they can just run their eyes through the notes at the last moment,” she added.
Nishita Mohta, a class 12 student of Delhi Public School, Mathura Road who is appearing for the Boards feels the same.
“Some of my friends use guides, since they feel it’s an easier way to prepare for the exams but I think that the NCERT books are enough my own notes are enough.”
Principal of Springdales School, Dhaula Kuan Jyoti Bose said, “Students should stay away from using guide books and prepare their own notes.”  She also feels that guidebooks are standardised and have set pattern.
“With each passing year, CBSE has been trying to encourage conceptual learning rather than rote learning. Guides can never compensate for the class notes and NCERT books,” added Bose.
She also said that students should focus on solving sample papers of the last 10 years, which will give them a fair idea of the kind of questions that they can expect.
‘Too much of stress affects performance’
Caller 1: I am a Class 12 student from Uttarakhand. I am very depressed and anxious regarding the exams. My mother is very authoritative and she wants me to study for 15-16 hours daily. While I am studying, she keeps peeping into my room just to ensure I am studying. I can’t wait to for the Boards to get over as I intend to pursue my higher studies away from home.
Response: One understands it must be very disturbing and stressful for you to cope with such behaviour of your mother. You mentioned you have been a very good student and securing 90% marks despite your circumstances. You also said that your father too wants you to study in an atmosphere, which will be free from your mother’s interference. This is possible only when you secure good marks and you can do that only when you focus on your study. Try to avoid your mother’s interfering attitude. Call your friends or us to share your feelings.
Caller 2: I am in class 10 class and passing through very hard times. My family environment is not conducive for studying. My father is alcoholic. He gets drunk everyday and fights with my mother and brother. I want to study and get good marks.
Response: One understands your anxiety given that you are in such a crucial stage of education. You mentioned that your father stays out since early morning till late evening. Make use of the 14-15 hours when he stays outside to study well. Try to make sure that your day remains pleasant. I understand it is not easy to make day comfortable after a traumatic experience at night daily. But try to focus on your studies.
Caller 3: I am in Class 12. I feel very sleepy and tired all the time. I want to study more but there is no time. My coaching class and assignments for various entrances do not leave me with time to even relax.
Response: You have no time to relax since your mind is always pre-occupied with studies and coaching assignments. That’s the reason you don’t feel fresh.
You need to change your routine and reschedule your day with regular breaks in between studies. Consult your coaching in-charge and request him/her to give a break till the Boards, so that you can only focus only on Boards. Everyone needs certain level of stress to perform but the moment the stress level goes beyond the optimum level the performance comes down drastically.TOI

CBSE schools to introduce new courses in hospitality and tourism

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is introducing new vocational courses -geospatial technology, food production (hospitality and tourism), food and beverage services (hospitality and tourism), Mass media studies and media production  - for classes XI and XII from 2011-12 session. The Board had started the course last year in a few schools as a pilot run. As per a circular issued by CBSE on February 3, these courses received an overwhelming response due to which CBSE decided to give an option to all its affiliated schools to start these courses.

According to CBSE, these vocational courses would help develop employability skills among students at the senior secondary level and also open various career options for them. "Demand for geospatial practices has skyrocketed over the past few years. This needs huge trained manpower. This course offers an opportunity for the students to understand the basics of geospatial technology dealing with mapping and applications. Students obtain insight into geospatial database concepts, creating and implementing databases, GIS theory, supported by extensive practical exercises, spatial analysis (network and surface operations) and developing geospatial practices skills," the circular mentioned. Schools interested in introducing these new courses are required to intimate the Board by March 5.

The CBSE had last year signed an agreement with Subhash Ghai’s Whistling Woods Institute and Rolta India for courses in mass media and geospatial practices, respectively. The two institutes are helping train teachers and develop curriculum.Earlier, a course in financial markets management was launched with the help of the NSE. The CBSE is examining other courses such as animation & design.

Admissions for BBA, MBA, BBA+MBA in IIPM

Welcome to the online interactive counseling web page of IIPM. Please leave your full name, email address, mobile number and choice of study a centre mentioned below, so that one of our Counseling Managers may get in touch with you shortly to understand your exact requirements before explaining the best available programme to you to help you attain your objectives. Once the Counselor Manager answers all your queries and you are satisfied, you will receive your free copy of the IIPM prospectus.

Apply here for Autumn-Winter & Spring Summer IIPM admissions 2011 in Chennai & Delhi.

IIPM admissions 2011 will be starting soon. Admission to various programs offered by IIPM is through a separate entrance exam conducted by the institute. E-PAT is the examination that is required for securing a seat in any of the IIPM branches.

IIPM Admission 2011 - Process

IIPM admissions are held twice a year. Fall sessions and the spring summer session; both are advertised in the newspapers regularly. Interested candidates can obtain the prospectus and the information brochure from the nearest IIPM office as mentioned in the advertisement.

It is suggested that students actually collect the prospectus in person from the IIPM office as it allows an opportunity to meet the existing students and the counselors in the campus who can directly help the students go ahead with the admission process.

Unlike other MBA colleges' applications forms, application forms at IIPM are available absolutely free of cost. Candidates can go through the prospectus and then fill up the application form for the desired program. Once the application form is submitted, candidates would get an admit card. The admit card is to be carried to take the E-PAT entrance exam.
E-PAT - IIPM Admission Test

A separate entrance test is conducted for IIPM admissions. Entrepreneurial & Planning admission test (E-PAT) is the name of the admission test. E-PAT is a three step process that tests a candidate on a variety of parameters by different tests. A student has to take the following to make it to desired IIPM programs:

• Written Exam
• Group Discussion
• Personal Interview

Although the steps in IIPM admission 2011 would be similar top those for any other entrance exam, there would be one major difference. E-PAT tests a candidate on emotional quotient (EQ), rather than on IQ. The reason for this as stated on the institute's official website is, "IIPM's admission test E-PAT is based more on parameters pertaining to EQ ( Emotional Quotient) and overall personality mapping since it has been globally observed that high IQ often takes a backseat to high EQ when it comes to Entrepreneurship, Management and dealing with human beings."

The composite score of E-PAT is used to make the final selection of students to various management programs being offered by IIPM. Besides, there are some basic eligibility criteria for admission to various programs based on the level of the programs. Refer to the official website for detailed information on the eligibility criteria for different programs and any other details.
