IGNOU Offers PG Programme on Sustainability Science

Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) will offer an online Post-Graduate Diploma Programme on Sustainability Science. The programme is being launched with an aim to cater to those students who are curious about the environment and the Earth.

 

The announcement regarding the launch of the programme was made on Friday i.e. on April 29, 2011 by an IGNOU official. Shailesh Nayak, Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences, has said that sustainability is anticipation or what is likely to happen, for example, with the monsoon, rainfall and winds.

 

According to IGNOU, those candidates who have pursued graduation from social and natural sciences streams, policy makers, administrators, scientists, educators and the general public are considered eligible apply for the programme. The programme has a minimum duration of one year and a maximum of four years.

 

IGNOU Vice Chancellor V.N. Rajasekharan Pillai, said that with the launch, IGNOU has become one of the very few universities in the world and the first in the country to start sustainability science as a new discipline.

Errors in Math Paper of IIT - JEE 2011

Multiple errors in the math question paper of IIT – JEE 2011 has been reported held last Sunday, an expert IIT mathematician has confirmed. One of the India’s reputed mathematicians, Professor KD Joshi of IIT Bombay told the sources that he has found over 10 marks-worth of errors in this year’s math papers in the IIT-JEE.

Joshi, who has analyzed IIT-JEE papers since 2003, said that the errors range from logically inconsistent questions to problems where students had to mark only one correct answer when more than one of the multiple-choice options were correct. Currently on assignment at the new IIT Indore, Joshi said that the worst part is that there is nothing the IITs can do about some of the errors. And they could decide whether a student makes it to the IITs or not. Moreover, Joshi will formally release his analysis of the JEE question papers soon.

As per sources, Joshi is the first from within the IIT system to confirm errors in the papers. Some coaching classes had claimed on April 10, the day of the IIT-JEE, that the paper had errors. Though the IITs set up a panel to probe errors, they said they had not received any complaints. Although coaching classes in previous years too have raised concerns regarding the IIT-JEE, the apex engineering schools often dismiss these concerns - questioning their expertise and motive. Greater student confusion benefits the coaching class business, IITs argue.

IIT officials accepted, Joshi’s analysis, will be harder to ignore. Joshi added that some of the errors are ironically such that they will hurt the most diligent students the most. Sources also informed that just 85 marks in maths separated the first ranker and the last general candidate over 6,000 ranks below admitted to the IITs last year.
